I write for Future Publishing's .Net Magazine (also published as Practical Web Design in the U.S.A.). .Net Magazine is a high quality magazine aimed at both amateur and professional web designers and web developers. I enjoy working with Future Publishing and I intend to continue this relationship long into the future.
I started working for HBOS's Halifax and Bank of Scotland brands as a data processor but quickly demonstrated my ability for absorbing knowledge. After only a short period of time my day involved training, providing support for and guidance to 40 staff. This was eventually turned into an official 'Quality Champion' role which additionally involved tracking the performance of colleagues, creating initiatives to improve the quality of work and implementing procedures to improve customer satisfaction.
Working at Round Lake Camp was both the most challenging and most rewarding experience of my life. My role involved caring for up to 9 children, 23 hours a day, 6 days a week. These children all had ADHD as well as a range of social disorders. This experience tested me on every level and as a result, I came out knowing a lot more about myself.
I was employed at Harvey Norman for my specialised knowledge of technology and software. My main role was as a salesperson, however I often proved my versatility by working in many other areas of the store. My experience at Harvey Norman increased my understanding of customer relations and the complexities of business. While at Harvey Norman I attended a series of 15 two hour training sessions based around the consultative sales process.
In my first job I was able to learn basic customer service and money handling skills. My leadership ability allowed me to often be called upon in a temporary supervisor role.
At the University of Auckland I studied Computer Science and specialised in Information Systems. I left my studies in order to travel overseas and I hope to one day return to university to complete my degree.
I attended Papatoetoe High School where I was a House Captain in my final year. As a House Captain it was my duty to lead weekly assemblies and to motivate students at school events. This was my first experience with public speaking and I learnt much during the year.
My main interest is in creating websites. I made my first website when I was 12, without Internet access and using the Frontpage Express software that was included in Windows 95. Now a decade later, my passion for creating websites has only grown and matured. I believe that you will be hard pushed to find anyone as passionate and enthusiastic about web design as I am.
I love story telling in all of its forms. I'm always in the middle of reading a novel and watch at least one film every week. I enjoy playing video games that contain deep and interesting stories. My favourite films include The Dark Knight, Donnie Darko, The Shawshank Redemption, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down and No Country for Old Men. My favourite books include 1984, Robert Ludlum's Jason Bourne series, Band of Brothers, Flags of the Fathers and John Marsden's Tomorrow series.
